Biopsy endoscopy
Endoscopic biopsy is a diagnostic procedure that uses an endoscope, which is a long, thin tube with a camera at the end, that is inserted into the body
Endoscopic biopsy is performed in the following cases:
- To diagnose and investigate the cause of digestive symptoms such as abdominal pain, intestinal bleeding, changes in bowel behavior, diarrhea or obesity
- To diagnose some digestive diseases such as intestinal inflammation, cancer, intestinal plaques and ulcers of the digestive system
- To treat some digestive problems such as intestinal bleeding, a definite decrease in blood flow to the digestive system, or removal of intestinal valves
- To collect tissue and cell samples from the digestive system in order to more accurately diagnose a disease
Also, using endoscopic biopsy, tissue samples are obtained for analysis in the laboratory
After endoscopic biopsy:
- After the biopsy, the site should be thoroughly cleaned. This is done using a soft and dry clothIf necessary, the area should be cleaned with a disinfectant solution. This solution should be used as directed by a doctor or nurse
- If there is bleeding, pressure should be applied on the bleeding site for at least 10 minutes
- See your doctor if you have signs of infection, such as pain, swelling, and redness
- Any strenuous activity, including exercise, should be avoided for at least 24 hours after the biopsy
- In case of severe discomfort, see your doctor
- Also, if you are dissatisfied with the results of the biopsy, see your doctor
Complications of endoscopic biopsy:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Rupture of the
- digestive tract
- Reaction to sedatives
How to prepare?
Stomach and intestines should be empty beforehand so that the images are clearer
- In the weeks when the endoscopy is done, The patient should eat foods that contain gluten. Although it may be uncomfortable for the patient, it is an important step in determining whether symptoms improve when eliminating gluten from the diet
- According to the patient’s age, the doctor determines whether to use sedation or general anesthesia for the patient. For example, general anesthesia is used for children, but sedation is used for young people and adults
